Knowledge, Attitude and Practice of HIV/ AIDS amongst University of Science and Technological Information students in Yangon Region

Introduction

 

In 2017, 35 million people have died of HIV globally and 36.9 million people were living with HIV. Myanmar is one of the 35 high burden countries in the world due to the high transmission rate among young populations.

There are few paper among the university study in Myanmar lead to develop the information gap in knowledge, attitude and practice of them regarding about the HIV infection.

Youths or young people of university students are most vulnerable to infection because they engage in risky practices due to a lack of adequate information, sexual interest, fear, culture norms, traditional belief, peer pressure, etc

 

 

Objectives

To determine the knowledge, attitude and practice of HIV/ AIDS amongst students at University of Information Technology, Hlaing township, Yangon Region.

 

 

Methods

 

Design: Institutional-based cross sectional descriptive study was conducted

Participants: 253 participants were conducted in this study.

Study period: From July, 2018 to September, 2018

Sampling Method and Procedure: This University was purposively selected from Yangon Region. Simple random sampling was provide by using lottery method.

Data collection: self-administrative questionnaires including Knowledge, Attitude and Practices of HIV referencing from WHO questionnaire and literature review that was conducted with the aid of researcher and trained research assistant.

Data management and analysis: Data entry was done by using Epidata manger software and data analysis was done by using SPSS software version 23. Level of knowledge, attitude and practices in term of mean, Chi-square test and p value.

Ethical consideration: Ethical clearance was obtained from Ethics Review Committee, Defence Services Medical Research Centre.

 

Conclusion and Recommendations

 

The more knowledge related with HIV/AIDS they have, the more attitude they occupied.

Boys were more likely to have better knowledge on HIV/AIDS than girl.

Although only 6 respondents had had an experience of sexual exposure, further study should be conducted to explore the reason behind the findings.
